


This course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate an evacuation chair during an emergency.
It focuses on correct handling techniques, understanding of equipment design and limitations, and coordination of safe evacuation for persons with reduced mobility in accordance with Irish fire safety and accessibility regulations.
The course is aimed at Fire wardens, safety representatives, first aiders, facilities and security staff and any employee assigned to assist mobility-impaired persons during emergency evacuations.
COURSE CONTENT & OBJECTIVES
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
• Understand the purpose and legal requirements for evacuation chairs in workplaces and public buildings.
• Identify the components, features, and safe operating procedures of evacuation chairs.
• Demonstrate correct manual handling and team coordination when using an evacuation chair.
• Plan and execute a safe evacuation procedure for persons with mobility impairments.
• Conduct pre-use checks and basic maintenance on the evacuation chair.
• Understand emergency roles and responsibilities during fire or building evacuations.
COURSE FORMAT
The training is interactive and participative, using a combination of classroom-based instruction, equipment demonstration and supervised practical exercises using an evacuation chair on stairs or slopes (where safe and practicable).
ASSESSMENTS
Participants will be assessed through:
Theory assessment to demonstrate subject understanding and continuous trainer assessment through participation, demonstration, and practical competency.
