Prevention and Management of Aggression and Violence at Work Instructor

This three-day PMAV Instructor Course is designed for individuals who are required to deliver PMAV training within their organisation or to external clients. The programme develops the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and instructional competence required to teach the prevention, recognition, de-escalation, and management of aggressive and violent behaviour in line with HSE & HSA guidance, legal responsibilities, and recognised best practice.


The course places strong emphasis on risk assessment, ethical decision-making, instructor delivery skills, and the principles of safe and proportionate physical intervention where avoidance and de-escalation are not possible.

Public courses are held at Nationwide Safety Training, Dunboyne, Co. Meath or private courses can be delivered nationwide at customers’ site or premises.

Candidate Requirements

 

Participants should have a good standard of English. Customers must provide a suitable training area for onsite training at
their location.

Accreditation

 

On successful completion, participants will receive a Nationwide Safety Training Accredited Certificate & Card in PMAV Instructor, valid for 5 years.

COURSE CONTENT & OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the causes, triggers, and escalation models of aggression and violence
  • Apply dynamic risk assessment principles to real-world scenarios
  • Teach and demonstrate effective communication and de-escalation techniques
  • Deliver PMAV training on personal safety awareness and situational control
  • Understand the legal framework, duty of care, and organisational responsibilities
  • Apply the principles of safe, proportionate physical intervention where unavoidable
  • Manage incidents safely while minimising risk to all parties
  • Teach correct incident recording, reporting, and post-incident review
  • Plan, structure, and deliver PMAV training sessions confidently
  • Assess learner competence and provide constructive feedback
  • Promote a culture of respect, prevention, and early intervention.

COURSE FORMAT

The training is interactive and participative, using:

  • Tutor-led presentations and facilitated discussions.
  • Instructor-level scenario analysis and role-play
  • Group workshops on lesson planning and delivery techniques
  • Review of case studies and personal experiences with PMAV
  • Practical demonstrations of de-escalation and safe intervention principles

ASSESSMENTS

Participants will be assessed through:

  • Observation of participation in role-play and scenario-based exercises.
  • Assessment of instructional delivery and facilitation skills
  • Written test on day 3.
