On successful completion of this course, candidates will be fully qualified to set up, maintain, modify, and remove temporary traffic management measures around roadworks in a safe and compliant manner. They will be able to manage the safe flow of traffic through and around roadworks, protecting both the workforce and road users.
In addition, participants will gain the skills to read, understand, and apply Traffic Management Plans in line with Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual, ensuring that all layouts and practices meet national standards and best practice guidelines

- Roadworks classification and the impact of different categories on traffic management requirements.
- Types of traffic management devices, their functions, and correct usage.
- Principles of traffic management layouts, including spacing, visibility, and safe positioning.
- Semi-static roadworks – methods, risks, and safe operating procedures.
- Application of traffic management systems in planned and emergency work situations.
- Planning considerations for temporary works, including risk assessments and method statements.
- Traffic management checks – ensuring compliance with standards, monitoring, and adjustments.
- Site record keeping, including statutory documentation and reporting.
- Classroom-based practical demonstrations and group exercises.
- Safe systems of installation and removal of signs, cones, barriers, and lighting.
- On-site practical training in setting up, maintaining, and removing traffic management systems safely.
