Vehicle/Lorry Mounted Crane (Hi-Ab) Operator Training

This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate lorry mounted cranes (HIAB) across construction, transport, logistics, and other industries. The training covers legislation, crane components, safe lifting practices, load security, and practical operation.

It is suitable for drivers, operators, and other personnel involved in loading, unloading, and transporting goods using lorry mounted cranes. Training ensures compliance with health & safety legislation, manufacturers’ instructions, and industry best practice.

COURSE CONTENT

  • Legislation & Standards – legal duties under Health & Safety, LOLER, PUWER, and GA1 requirements.
  • Roles & Responsibilities – operator, banksman, and site management duties.
  • Crane Types & Components – HIAB features, controls, stabilisers, and attachments.
  • Pre-Use Inspections – daily checks, defect reporting, and record keeping.
  • Stability & Safe Positioning – ground conditions, stabilisers, and safe working load limits.
  • Lifting Principles – load charts, slinging methods, and safe use of lifting accessories.
  • Safe Operating Practices – lifting, slewing, extending, retracting, and lowering loads.
  • Communication & Signalling – working with banksmen and standard hand signals.
  • Load Security & Transport Safety – securing loads for transit and preventing shifting.
  • Emergency Procedures – dealing with equipment failure, power loss, and unsafe situations.
  • Demonstration of Learning – Delegates will complete practical and written assessments
