


This course provides participants with the knowledge, skills, and resources to become competent instructors in safe working at height practices and to carry out Reports of Thorough Examination on harnesses and lanyard systems.
The programme is designed for those moving into instructional and inspection roles within construction, facilities management, utilities, warehousing, and related industries.
All delegates will receive a comprehensive resource pack including PowerPoint, course notes, videos, forms, test papers, HSA guides, and other working at height information.
COURSE CONTENT
- Legislation & Standards – Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act 2005, Work at Height Regulations, EN standards for fall protection.
- Definition of Competence – understanding “competent person” under the 2005 Act and its application
- Roles & Responsibilities – duties of instructors, inspectors, employers, and employees when working at height.
- Principles of Working at Height – hazard awareness, risk assessments, and hierarchy of controls (avoid, prevent, minimise).
- Access Equipment Overview – safe use of ladders, scaffolds, MEWPs, podiums, and edge protection systems.
- Fall Protection Systems – types of harnesses, lanyards, connectors, anchor points, energy absorbers, and lifelines.
- Pre-Use Checks & Inspections – daily user checks, identifying wear, damage, or defects.
- Thorough Examination Procedures – formal inspection process, record keeping, and issuing inspection certificates.
- Instructor Skills Development – adult learning principles, training delivery, and communication techniques.
- Lesson Planning & Resources – structuring training sessions, using training aids, and assessing learners.
- Practical Training Delivery – presenting, demonstrating, and evaluating safe working at height practices.
- Assessment & Certification – conducting learner assessments and continuous improvement as a competent instructor/inspector.
